The Oldest Wine Route in South Africa

Due to the sheer size of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the Wine Route is divided into four sub routes – Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates, Bottelary Hills Wine Estates, Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates and Stellenbosch Valley Wine Estates. Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates includes renowned wineries such as LanzeracKleine ZalzeBlaauwklippen and Dornier; Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates connects, amongst others, WarwickKanonkopMuratieSimonsigTokara as well as Delaire Graff. The Stellenbosch Valley Estates links NeethlingshofZevenwachtSpier and Meerlust.

Approximately 15% of the South African wine cultivation area is within the region Stellenbosch – not only due to the mild climate which is influenced by the False Bay and the Atlantic. Numerous white washed houses in Cape Dutch style and impressive oak avenues make the town and the surroundings with the vast vineyards a true highlight.

South Africa‘s Mecca of Wine Cultivation

Like no other wine route, the Stellenbosch Wine Route offers the highest density of excellent premium wines, rich in tradition and stories. Stellenbosch is the second-eldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the later governor and father of wine cultivation in the Cape Colony. The town is merely 50km away from Cape Town. Due to nutritious soils, rainy winters and warm summers, the landscape is simply perfect for the cultivation of first-class wines.

Quickly, Stellenbosch became the first-class wine region and experienced a rapid increase; numerous settlers founded their wineries here. Due to the Apartheid policy, tourism in the 1970s was very slow in South Africa. In order to change that, amongst others the wineries Simonsig and Spier collaborated and founded the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the very first wine route in South Africa!

Stellenbosch South Africa with a Long Tradition

Stellenbosch South Africa has a long tradition in wine. The country’s first wineries have been founded here, which is why it is also called the ‘birthplace of wine growing’. It is no surprise that over 120 wineries produce premium wines of the highest quality in Stellenbosch South Africa. Again and again, with every vintage. Not for nothing, South Africa is considered being one of the best regions for New World wine.

Stellenbosch South Africa Wineries

Stellenbosch South Africa is a popular destination for a wine tour. The region is located only a few kilometres from Cape Town and features renowned wineries such as Delaire Graff, Neethlingshof, Beyerskloof, Spier, Dornier, Zevenwacht and many more. Picturesque landscapes and beautiful architecture invite visitors to prolong their stay. Often, couples in love choose Stellenbosch South Africa for their wedding; a romantic frame and, of course, premium wines are definitely taken care of.

Stellenbosch South Africa Shop with a Great Range

You can order wine from South Africa, or Cape wine in the Stellenbosch South Africa wine shop. Besides Stellenbosch wine, you can find Paarl wine, Franschhoek wine and Constantia wine. You also have a great selection of wines from the Cape, or Africa wine.

Some Highlights at the Stellenbosch Wine Route

Each and every winery at the Stellenbosch Wine Route is worth a visit and it is so difficult to highlight only a few just because of the sheer number. Yet, we will have a try!

Besides first-class wines, Lanzerac offers its guests a luxury hotel and a starred restaurant with modern African cuisine. Highly recommendable!

Blaauwklippen with its historic, Cape Dutch style buildings is beautifully located at the foot of the Stellenbosch Mountain and quite likely produces the best Zinfandel at the Cape.

The Terroir restaurant at the winery Kleine Zalze is a must on every culinary map. Besides, the winery offers an exquisite 18 holes golf course and outstanding comfort in the Kleine Zalze Lodge.

At Warwick Estate the excellent wines can be tasted in the middle of nature at a picnic. Among the picnic baskets that are served with the wine are vegetarian and vegan varieties.

In the rooms of Muratie, you are transported back to another time – here, history becomes alive and you can find artefacts from the past everywhere. The wines are named after former estate owners, for example George Paul Canitz, Alberta Annemarie and Ronnie Melck.

The winery Simonsig is inextricably linked with the term Cap Classique because Simonsig was the first winery to produce sparkling wine inspired by the Méthode Cap Classique. A must-try!

With the historic buildings and many activities, Spier offers something for every taste – it makes it particularly suitable for families with the right mixture of pleasure, delight and events. Spier is considered to be the most important winery at the Stellenbosch Wine Route.

Neethlingshof, founded in 1692 by a German immigrant, is famous for its impressive avenue leading up to the manor house. The wines of the Short Story Collection unite first-class delight with sustainable cultivation.

Beyerskloof is best known for its excellent wines from South Africa's national grape, Pinotage, including Diesel Pinotage, which visitors to the winery can enjoy with a breathtaking view of the landscape.

The quality of a wine begins in the vineyard - that is the philosophy of Zevenwacht. The estate focuses on sustainable cultivation and creates authentic wines that have already won numerous awards.

Raats Family Wines has two great passions: Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Specialised in these two grape varieties, the estate produces exceptional wines, influenced by the terroir of Stellenbosch.

Since the middle of the 18th century, Meerlust has been a family winery that is not afraid to break new ground, as with the red wine Rubicon it created one of the first blends on the Cape. The picturesque estate makes a visit to the estate unforgettable.

At Cavalli, hearts beat not only for good wine, but also for horses, as four-legged friends are present everywhere on this modern estate. A restaurant - which has been awarded the Green Star Award - and an art gallery make a visit to the estate an experience to remember.

A successful symbiosis of French and South African flair is offered by the boutique winery L' Avenir, which focuses on the production of elegant wines from Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.

For four generations, the Sauer family has been producing top wines on Kanonkop, which have received international awards. The estate offers various tasting opportunities and traditional Cape Barbecue all year round.

For the Boustred family, wines are an experience, so they intervene as little as possible in their creation process at Remhoogte so that the terroir can develop in the wine. The ambience also contributes to the enjoyment of the experience - with a great view of the Stellenbosch Mountains.

One of the travel highlights in Stellenbosch is the Tokara Winery, ensured by the excellent wines, the unforgettable view at the summit of the Helshoogte Pass and the restaurant with its culinary delights.

If you like elegant wines, the Neil Ellis estate is the place to be. The style of the wines expressively reflects the respective terroir. A special tasting option is the "Pesto and Wine Play" with four pesto variations.

One of the most famous and luxurious wineries in Stellenbosch is Delaire Graff. Unique, elegant wines, a heavenly view, art and cuisine of the highest standard make a visit an exclusive experience.

The curved, unusual architecture of the wine cellar is as much a trademark of Dornier as its complex wines. In the Bodega restaurant, visitors can be pampered with seasonally changing dishes.

Against the backdrop of the majestic Helderberg Mountains, the Peter Falke estate captivates with its ambience and wonderful interior design as well as with its excellent wines, which can be tasted on the large terrace.

The Kleinood winery lives up to its name, as the de Villiers family has created a little jewel. The estate specialises in the Syrah grape variety and grows both vines and olives.

Immerse yourself in the world of wine - this is possible during a stay at Waterford, because during the tasting, visitors can observe what happens in the wine cellar. The Wine Drive Safari offers a special experience.

Under the motto "Passion for elegance" of professional golfer Ernie Els, the modern Ernie Els winery creates outstanding wines that regularly win awards from critics. The estate's focus is on red wines.

The Quoin Rock winery owes its name to the southernmost tip of Africa. The elegant, multi-faceted and emblematic wines reflect the cultural diversity of the Ukrainian owner family's old and new homeland.
