Klaas Stoffberg

Having grown up among the vineyards of the family farm, Klaas Stoffberg initially wanted to study architecture, but his love of viticulture and his interest in wine production were so great that he studied viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University. Afterwards, Klaas gained experience in the American Napa Valley and in Bordeaux in France and worked for several wineries in South Africa before he finally came to Babylonstoren. It was here that he learned his greatest lesson: "With winemaking, every year is something new and different, and through the years I have learnt the importance of adapting and adjusting to the different challenges. There are no shortcuts in winemaking." Klaas' passion for winemaking is also reflected in the many awards he has received, but he still has many goals he wants to achieve. One of them is to get a place on the list of the hundred best wine destinations with Babylonstoren.

What our Customers think

Babylonstoren in front of a stunning scenery

Babylonstoren lies between Stellenbosch and Paarl against the breathtaking backdrop of the Simonsberg Mountains. The historic winery was named after the hill "Babel", which is located directly next to the winery. Babylonstoren is one of the oldest wineries in South Africa. The history of the winery goes back to 1692 and many details remind of the long tradition of Babylonstoren. The Cape Dutch architecture of the buildings has been largely preserved and very carefully supplemented with ultra-modern accents. The wines are now produced in a state-of-the-art wine cellar designed by Gerard de Villiers, owner of the Kleinood winery and one of the most famous architects in his field!

Babylonstoren is an experience

The picturesque backdrop of Babylonstoren is wonderfully complemented by the winery´s large garden. This forms the heart of the winery. Besides fruit and vegetables, berries and native plants grow here. Each of the more than 300 plant species is edible or of medical value. The majestic garden invites guests to relax. In addition to the wonderful wines, olives are also grown here for the winery's own olive oil production. In addition, visitors can enjoy tea from their own cultivation in the "Tea Ceremony", taste homemade products in the "Bakery", eat in a relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant "Greenhouse" or visit the popular restaurant Babel to be pampered at the highest level. The range is rounded off by the Babylonstoren winery with a 5* boutique hotel and an unusual spa area.

Award-winning Babylonstoren wines

Babylonstoren produces the finest South African wines from thirteen grape varieties in its ultra-modern wine cellar. The flagship of Babylonstoren is the Nebuchadnesar. A limited blend from the Cabernet SauvignonMerlotCabernet FrancPetit Verdot and Malbec grape varieties and named after the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar. Babylonstoren wine should reflect the soils of the vines and the climate of the vineyards. These wonderful drops can be tasted overlooking the Babylonstoren Hill in the extraordinary wine cellar.
