Paarl - South Africa’s Pearl

The Paarl Wine Route as well as the town Paarl itself are situated approximately 50km away from Cape Town in the valley of the Berg River, surrounded by the majestic Paarl Mountain and the impressive Drakenstein Mountain Range. The wine cultivation area is therefore north of Stellenbosch. Founded in 1717, Paarl is the largest city in the heart of the Cape Province and the third-eldest European settlement in South Africa. The Afrikaans name Paarl means pearl and this is exactly what the town as well as the wineries are after a hard time at the end of the last century. The first settlers named their settlement after the Paarl Mountain, an impressive granite rock which shimmers like a pearl in sunlight.

20 wineries around Paarl have teamed up to form the Paarl Wine Route, amongst others renowned wineries such as Nederburg or Fairview. The Paarl Wine Route is also called the Red Route since its red wines are legendary. Excellent red wines made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Merlot and Shiraz turned the Paarl Route and the wines into a household name.

Excellent Terroir at the Paarl Wine Route

Alongside the Wine Route around Paarl, the Mediterranean climate and the different soils offer ideal conditions for wine cultivation. In close proximity to the mountain, the soil is rich in granite whilst in other parts, it features sandier structures. This makes for varied soil conditions which is perfect for the selection of the optimal location.

The Berg River provides the valley with water through which the vines located close to the mountain are always supplied with sufficient water. Only in the valley, the winemakers have to additionally irrigate on hot summer days.

Paarl South Africa is the ‘Pearl’ of the Country

Paarl South Africa means ‘pearl of South Africa’. The region owes this name to the mountains which shine in a pearl like colour during sunset. Not only the landscape is impressive, some Paarl wineries established here and caused a sensation internationally. Especially Backsberg, Fairview and Spice Route belong to the most popular yards. The special climate and the terroir are guarantors for excellent premium wines, which internationally excite critics and gourmets likewise. Paarl South Africa and many winemakers of the specific Paarl winery became widely accepted in the international wine world.

Paarl South Africa in the Wine Online Shop

Find Paarl South Africa wine in our Paarl Online shop. Taste the differences and distinctive features of each and every Paarl winery and get an impression of the wines from the Cape, or Cape wine. You can also discover another South Africa winery with its wine from South Africa. There is Stellenbosch wine in the Stellenbosch shop, and you can find Constantia wine, Franschhoek wine and other Africa wine in the South Africa wine shop. New World wine is soon to exceed the Old World in terms of quality and expectations; often (as is the case for Paarl South Africa) this has already occurred. Cape wine is pioneering this progression.

Highlights at the Paarl Wine Route: Nederburg, Fairview & Babylonstoren

The winery Nederburg – well-known far beyond the country borders – is located seven kilometers northeast of the town Paarl. The historic manor house from 1800 excites visitors with its Cape Dutch architecture. The wine tastings take place in this wonderful atmosphere.

The Marianne Wine Estate represents a successful symbiosis of French and South African flair. The family Dauriac owns three further wineries in France, but fell in love with the country during a trip to South Africa and acquired the Marianne estate, which is known for its powerful red wines.

Tradition and modernity go hand in hand at Fairview, as it is one of the oldest wineries in the Cape and the team in the wine cellar likes to break new ground and experiment with rather unknown grape varieties. The result: fruit-driven and often innovative wines.

Babylonstoren is a true gem of the unique Cape Dutch architecture and the modern wine cellar offers a breathtaking view of the vineyards. The cellar and the beautiful gardens can be visited on a guided tour. In addition to elegant wines, the estate also produces excellent olive oils.
