Vrede en Lust – Magnificent View of the Mountains of Franschhoek
Vrede en Lust benefits from its breathtaking location in the Franschhoek Valley. Since 1996, the Buys family is running the Vrede en Lust estate, one of the most beautiful and most exciting in South Africa. Meanwhile, it has a firm place within the elite of South African wineries. Besides vineyards in Franschhoek, this estate has its own slopes and a farm in the Cool Climate region Elgin. This enables the winemaker team to choose between different terroirs and a selected stock of vines.

Karlin Nel
Karlin Nel was only 26 years old when in autumn 2017, she accepted the position as winemaker at Vrede en Lust and therefore followed the footsteps of her former boss Susan Erasmus. ‘I have always dreamed about making people happy, to see them celebrating, smiling, dancing and enjoying life’, Karlin says. When she discovered the magic of wine, she had found the right means to fulfil this dream – the only thing she had to do was to learn this wonderful trade. She did have the time for that during her time as assistant of Susan Erasmus. Now, it is her being responsible for the wine cellar. Wine is Karlin’s passion – besides patience and determination the most important aspect of wine production.

Vrede en Lust Wine for Gourmets
Vrede en Lust is defined by a high quality regarding taste and complexity. The red as well as the white wines feature an honest character that reflects the terroir in which the vines ripened. Vrede en Lust's winemakers only minimally intervene in the natural ripening process and only selectively use cellar technology to enhance the typical features of the grape varieties. Each Vrede en Lust wine is a typical South African wine with its strong fruits and rich body.
The Vrede en Lust Vineyard
The Vrede en Lust vineyard is located at the Simonsberg and is worth a visit for its view on the beautiful landscape. Since the late 17th century, winemakers have cultivated various grape varieties and still maintain a constant high level with their premium wines. Vrede en Lust belongs to the cultivation area Franschhoek and benefits from the ideal geographical as well as climatic conditions. Soils are rich in minerals and deliver sufficient nutrients for the vines, whilst the combination of long sun hours and the cooling Atlantic breeze, the Cape Doctor, ensures that the vines can ripen optimally.
