Only around 1,000 to 1,300 bottles are produced each year. Every bottle is individually numbered at the base, making this Shiraz a rare collector’s item for lovers of fine South African red wine.
The 2023 vintage was shaped by a dry growing season and smaller berries, resulting in remarkable concentration and structure. Granite-rich soils from Swartland bring lifted aromatics and dark fruit intensity, while Stellenbosch’s iron-rich terroir adds earthy depth and subtle tobacco notes.
On the nose, the wine reveals graphite, black cherry, mulberry, dried cranberry and exotic spice. The palate is dense, juicy and powerful, unfolding with rich blackberry, aniseed and sweet tobacco. Fine-grained tannins and a long polished finish highlight its elegance and complexity.
The wine matured for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels and is presented in an exquisite black wooden case. A special detail makes it truly unique: a key is embedded in the box and used to open the screwed lid – a luxurious touch that also makes The Black Lion an exceptional gift.
