Viognier is a noble grape whose deep yellow, full-bodied and dry white wines are defined by much elegance, finesse and style. The grape gives off the scent of apricots and musk. Floral notes of violets and lilies of the valley can also be detected. Fruity nuances of peach also fill the air. A fine acidity rounds off Viognier wines harmoniously and balanced. Viognier – Comeback of a High Class Grape
Originally, Viognier derives from France and belongs to the older grape varieties. For hundreds of years, winemakers have been planting this white grape and get excellent results especially in the area of the northern Rhône. Adding the cultivation areas in Languedoc-Roussillon, Viognier covers a planting surface of approximately four thousand hectares. The high class vine can also be found in Chile, California and South Africa; yet this has not always been the case. In the seventies, the demand was so little that Viognier wine could hardly be found anywhere. Luckily, some winemakers recognized the high potential of Viognier - the noble grape had a comeback.
