Petit Verdot – dark red wines with lots of tannin
Its name translates as "the little green one", but the red grape variety with its nice acidity and high tannin content delivers powerful, expressive and storable wines with spicy notes and aromas of raspberries and violets. Originally Petit Verdot comes from France, but today it is mainly found in the New World – also in South Africa.

Petit Verdot tastes spicy and is full of tannins
Petit Verdot also called “little greenfinch” („kleiner Grünling“) yields dark, strong and storable red wines with a distinctive tannin structure and prominent sourness. Flavours of banana, pepper and other spices are typical for a young Petit Verdot while nuances of tobacco, clove and leather can be developed in older ones. The grape that is original from France covers about three thousand hectares wine growing area in thier home country. Through a mixture with Duras it results to the rare grape variety Tressot. First records of Petit Verdot are from the eighteenth century but probably the variety exists much longer.
Petit Verdot is often used in blends
Petit Verdot with its concentrated, full body and its spicy taste is often used in cuvées with softer red wines for giving them strength, structure and persistance. In France wine growers blend it with Cabernet Sauvignon to create strong cuvées. The grape is also a part of the famous Bordeaux Blend.
Gourmets in the whole world like the taste of Petit Verdot
Petit Verdot is a small, thick-skinned grape that ripes late and therefore involves the risk of a bad crop because of frost. Therefore wine growers mostly plant this variety in South Africa, Chile and in South Australia. The warmer climate provides for a calculable ripening process. Wine lovers can find South African Petit Verdot at our South Africa Wine Online Shop. They can choose from a large range of premium wines and easily order their favourite.
