John Platter
John Platter, South Africa's best-known wine critic and journalist, is the founder of "John Platter's South African Wine Guide". The book, which has been published once a year since 1978, deals with wine ratings and the assessment of the respective wineries and is the wine book par excellence in the Cape. The wine evaluation is given by the so-called Platter stars in steps of 0.5. Starting with 0 stars, the really interesting wines begin with 2.5 stars, which are described as good wine for every day. The maximum yield of five stars attain only the least, noblest drops. However, these top wines then stand for high and exceptional quality. John Platter himself retired from active business a few years ago, but the wine guide is still published.
