Springfield - Born to make wine
On the banks of the Breede River lies the Springfield Estate, which is run by the engaged siblings Abrie and Jeanette Bruwer. Springfield has been in the family for nine generations and is able to look back on a long history, that began in 1688. Today it is one of South Africa's outstanding wine estates.
The roots of the Bruwer family go back to the French Huguenots, who once came to Robertson in South Africa. However, it is the current generation that stands out from the previous ones. The innovation and unconventional approaches of Abrie Bruwer make a decisive difference here. In wine-growing communities, Bruwer is known as a "wine maniac" because of his unusual production methods. His approach combines traditional winemaking with the latest insights from the wine world, resulting in stunning, unique wines. The renowned wine expert John Platter once said, that Bruwer is : "Born to it" - born to make wine. Springfield thus stands not only for a long tradition, but also for passion, innovation and remarkable winemaking.
Springfield - Where handcrafted elegance is born on rocky terroir
Originally known as "Klipdrift", which can be translated as "stone drift", refers to the special location of the estate. Springfield has become synonymous with handcrafted elegance on rocky
terroir.
Springfield is known for its unique area in the heart of Robertson, which is characterised by predominantly rocky soils, but also has calcareous and clayey grounds. The mixture of these different soil types in which the vines are grown, contribute to the great character of Springfield wines, which are bursting with quality and traditional production. Robertson is especially well known for a growing area of
white wines.
The Chardonnay grape in particular thriving here due to the cool air from the westerly winds. In terms of red wines,
Shiraz and
Cabernet Sauvignon shine with their outstanding quality. For Abrie Bruwer himself,
Sauvignon Blanc is his special passion.
Springfield - Wine is the gift of nature
Springfield makes every decision in favour of wine, because for them every drop is a gift. By minimising intervention in wine production, each wine is given the opportunity to flourish as naturally as possible. In keeping with Springfield's philosophy that "good wine is grown, not made", the best wines are created through the unadulterated forces of nature. Each bottle is uncomplicated and a present to the winery, which you can literally feel in every sip.
