Unoaked

Unoaked or Unwooded refers to the deliberate omission of wood in the preparation of wines. Some winemakers now use stainless steel tanks during fermentation to bring out the true nature of the grapes. Likewise, the elements of the soil are to be highlighted. This method specifically emphasizes fruity, fresh flavors that might be lost if oak barrels were used. Chardonnay, in particular, is synonymous with the so-called Unoaked wine in South Africa. Since many connoisseurs reflexively expect Chardonnay to be aged in oak, this grape variety in particular, but not only, is characterized by the fact that the wine comes along without wood aromas.
