Merlot
Merlot belongs to the noble grape varieties and is particularly popular due to its soft body and gentle tannins. Winemakers use the grape both as a single-varietal wine and as a blend partner, primarily to ensure a harmonious and elegant overall impression with strong grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. The prevailing climatic conditions in South Africa do not always make it easy for wineries to produce high quality Merlot, which is why some critics rate such creations from the Cape lower in quality. However, current creations from renowned estates such as Lanzerac, Vrede en Lust and Spier show that excellent Merlot wines can also be produced in South Africa.
