Aroma

The aroma gives the wine its scent and taste. Above all, the effect on the sense of smell in the nose is an important component of wine enjoyment. Aroma is also called bouquet, but is not subject to any clear demarcations. Bouquet is divided into four types: primary bouquet refers to aromas that occur in uninjured grapes. Aromas from processing are called secondary bouquet. In the fermentation bouquet, aromas arise from alcoholic fermentation, and in the storage bouquet, aromas appear during storage. Up to 500 different aromas can be assigned to a wine. South African wines are known for their pronounced fruit aromas, but in the premium segment, depending on the cellar technology used, the other bouquet types also come into their own.
