Michiel du Toit
Michiel du Toit grew up in Sommerset West and actually wanted to become a dentist. However, visits to his grandfather's farm in Tulbagh sparked his interest in agriculture and in his second year at Stellenbosch University he became fascinated with viticulture – graduating top of his class at Elsenburg College for Agriculture. His career as a winemaker started in Darling and took him to Paarl before Michiel joined Asara. In his work as a winemaker, it is important for him to be hands-on in the vineyard and to intervene as little as possible in the cellar, so that the fruit and terroir of the wines can fully develop in each bottle.

What our Customers think
Asara: Fine South African wines from Stellenbosch
When entrepreneur and wine lover Markus Rahmann bought Asara in the heart of Stellenbosch in 2001, a new era began for the winery, whose tradition dates back to 1691. Over the past two decades, it has developed into a place where good food and fine South African premium wines take centre stage. On about one hundred hectares of vineyards, mainly red grape varieties are cultivated, from which excellent red wine is produced. However, those who prefer white wine will also find what they are looking for in Asara's extensive portfolio.
Asara wines for red and white wine fans
South Africa's national grape Pinotage is found in every range of the winery – from the Vineyard Collection to the Terroir and Speciality Range. In the Avalon, it is part of a powerful red wine cuvée of Pinotage and Shiraz and provides a complex and intense flavour. One of the flagship wines called The Bell Tower, on the other hand, is a classic red wine blend of the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Incidentally, the name The Bell Tower goes back to Asara's trademark: a bell tower, which is located on the grounds of the winery and is also part of the Asara logo. On about thirty percent of the vineyard area, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are vinified into single-varietal white wines or blends such as the Vineyard Collection Chenin Blanc.
Terroir-specific wines from Asara
Sustainable farming plays an important role in winemaking, Asara has been awarded Champion status by the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) for its commitment to conservation. Minimal intervention takes place in the wine cellar so that each Asara wine can express its terroir to the best of its ability. Those visiting the winery can see this for themselves in the Tasting Room. The luxurious hotel and spa area invite you to stay longer and take a break from everyday life – and are the ideal starting point to explore the Stellenbosch region and enjoy the excellent wines.
