The De Toren Edition Z 2019 is a harmonious yet characterful Bordeaux-style blend from South Africa. The grapes originate from one of the coolest vintages in Stellenbosch in recent years, giving the wine remarkable freshness, elegance and aromatic depth.
There is a unique story behind De Toren Edition Z. The wine was created from cool, ocean-facing vineyards with high clay content, providing ideal conditions for Merlot. The “Z” refers to the Dutch word “Zuid” (South), symbolising the cooling southern Atlantic winds that influence the vineyards. These maritime conditions contribute freshness, elegance and exceptional balance. The wine is also affectionately known as “Zee”, the Dutch word for sea, highlighting the close connection between ocean, climate and terroir.
The bouquet reveals ripe red fruit complemented by creamy mineral notes and delicate hints of herbs and anise. Aromas of mulberries and blueberries add further depth and make this wine particularly expressive.
On the palate, the wine is linear, precise and medium-bodied, with beautifully integrated notes of red and black currants. Vibrant acidity and well-judged oak influence contribute to a refined and balanced tasting experience.
The wine matured for 12 months in French oak barrels and impresses with its outstanding balance of freshness, structure and elegance.
Thanks to its freshness, medium body and lively acidity, De Toren Edition Z 2019 is an exceptionally versatile food wine. It pairs beautifully with delicately spiced dishes as well as rich fish, lamb, duck, beef and poultry.
When stored under optimal conditions, this elegant red wine offers an ageing potential of 15 years and more.
