Mourvèdre – A Spanish Star in South Africa
The red grape variety originally comes from Spain, but thanks to its spicy notes, it is also used in South Africa for red wine blends. Mourvèdre harmonises very well with Shiraz in particular. Since the berries are very small and sweet, they produce red wines with a lot of tannin, a high alcohol content and aromas of dark fruits and herbs.

Mourvèdre is dark and strongly aromatic
Mourvèdre yields a dark, deep red wine with a strong and tannic character and a moderate sourness. Typical for this rich variety are aromas of blackberries, leather, liquorice and pepper. Also other spices like thyme are perceivable. Mourvèdre is very popular for its intensive flavour of liquorice and its nuances of dark chocolate and lavender. Red wines that are made from Mourvèdre are long-lasting and can intensify their charakter through the ripening in barriques. Mourvèdre goes very well with venison, spicy stews with beef, lamb or roast hare and in combination with winter stews and ewe’s cheese.
Mourvèdre is often used in cuvées
Mourvèdre adds a strong, intensive character to the perfection of excellent red wines. Vintners like to blend the small, thick-skinned and sweet grape with Grenache and Cinsaut to premium cuvées. Mourvèdre is a part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other wines from the southern Rhône.
