Rosé Wine Production: Methods, Color & Fermentation Explained
Rosé wine is made from red grapes but vinified like white wine, with limited skin contact—typically 4 to 12 hours - allowing only a small amount of pigment to color the juice. Depending on grape variety and maceration time, the color ranges from pale pink to salmon. There are three main production methods: classic maceration (short skin contact before pressing), the saignée method (drawing off juice from red wine fermentation), and direct pressing (vin gris), where grapes are pressed immediately. Fermentation usually takes place at cool temperatures in stainless steel to retain freshness and fruitiness. Rosé wines are typically enjoyed young.
