Stony Brook – Character from Franschhoek
Stony Brook Vineyards is a family-run boutique winery located in the peaceful Bo-Hoek area of Franschhoek. Since 1995, the McNaught family has pursued the goal of producing high-quality wines that authentically reflect their origin. The winemaking philosophy is firmly rooted in the Old World, combining traditional methods with an exploratory approach to grape varieties and blends. Across approximately 13 hectares of vineyards, decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone play a defining role in shaping the site. Today, winemaker Craig McNaught leads the family estate, continuing his parents’ uncompromising commitment to quality. Produced in small quantities, the wines stand for balance, individuality and a distinctive expression of the Franschhoek terroir.

Winemaker at Stony Brook: Craig McNaught
Craig McNaught took over as winemaker at Stony Brook Vineyards in 2011 and has continued to lead the family estate since his parents, Nigel and Joy, retired in 2023. Unlike many of his peers, Craig has no formal training in viticulture or oenology, but developed his knowledge from an early age through extensive exposure to international wines. Particularly influential was the wide range of wines from around the world that his father imported and shared with him. Craig’s philosophy combines Old World inspiration with New World innovation. For him, the focus is not on technical analysis, but on enjoyment: his wines are intended to reflect origin, balance and character, while above all bringing pleasure to those who drink them.

Stony Brook – Character from Franschhoek's Bo-Hoek
Stony Brook Vineyards is located in the peaceful Bo-Hoek area of Franschhoek and has been shaped by the McNaught family since 1995. Nigel and Joy McNaught fell in love with the region, purchased the estate and laid the foundation for a winery focused from the very beginning on high-quality wines with a strong sense of origin. The entire farm was replanted with vines and a small cellar was built, where the first wines under the Stony Brook Vineyards name were produced. Today, their son Craig McNaught continues to run the family estate, combining his parents' original vision with his own modern approach. The farm covers around 28 hectares, approximately 13 hectares of which are planted with vines, including Sémillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot.
Stony Brook Wine – Old World Inspiration Meets New World Innovation
The winemaking philosophy at Stony Brook is strongly influenced by the Old World and inspired by some of Europe's most renowned wine regions. Traditional methods form the foundation of the winemaking process, while the approach to grape varieties, planting and blending remains deliberately open-minded and experimental. The vineyards grow on a variety of soils, particularly decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone. Their excellent drainage ensures that the vines experience controlled water stress even during wet winters. This helps to limit excessive growth and allows the grapes to develop concentration, structure and a clear expression of their origin. The wines are produced in small quantities and stand for balance, individuality and a distinctive sense of terroir.
Ghost Gum – Stony Brook's Flagship Wines
The strictly limited Ghost Gum wines play a particularly important role in the portfolio of Stony Brook. They take their name from a large old gum tree growing near the estate's tasting room. For the Ghost Gum White and Ghost Gum Red, only the finest Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon parcels of the estate are selected. Only grapes and barrels of exceptional quality make their way into these wines, which are produced in very small quantities. They represent a particularly precise expression of the Bo-Hoek terroir and embody the Stony Brook philosophy in concentrated form: origin, balance, passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
