Terroir

Terroir is a term originating from the French and includes the interaction of all site factors and the resulting growing conditions of a grape variety. The totality of all factors such as the soil, the climate and the terrain in connection with the activity of man has an impact on the character of the wine. South Africa's soils are very diverse, which offers a great attraction for the production of wine there. The so-called "Cape Doctor", the wind from the Atlantic, provides an excellent maritime climate and a healthy growth of the vine. The term terroir is frequently found in wine descriptions, especially in recent years, for many critics it even occurs inflationary too often. That the terroir has an impact on taste and quality is undisputed, but the proof that one can actually recognize certain terroirs by taste has so far only been provided by absolute wine experts.
