Steen
Steen is the South African term for the white grape variety Chenin Blanc. The word "Steen" means "stone" in Dutch and is rooted in the influence of Dutch and Danish settlers. The variety was likely introduced to the Cape of Good Hope from Europe as early as the 17th century and went on to become the most widely planted white grape in South Africa. In the past, Steen was often used for simple, mass-produced wines or distilled into brandy. Since the 1990s, however, the variety has seen a remarkable renaissance and is now embraced by many top producers as a versatile and high-quality wine grape. Steen is capable of producing a wide range of styles — from fresh, fruity everyday wines to complex, barrel-aged premium wines with aging potential. Typical aromas include apple, quince, honey, melon, and sometimes a touch of waxiness or minerality. Especially old vines in regions such as Swartland, Stellenbosch, and Paarl yield concentrated, structured wines that have gained significant international recognition. Today, Steen symbolizes the qualitative rise of South African white wines and is a central component of the country’s modern wine identity.
