Single variety

A single-variety wine consists of only one grape variety. The opposite of single varietal is called a cuvée, blend or blending. Single varietal wines have become popular again with the preference of labeling the name of the grape variety, after cuvées were long considered the better wines. For South Africa, notable examples of varietal pure are Pinotage, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Chenin, as well as Shiraz.
