Port Wine

Port wine is a sweet and fortified dessert wine that originates in Douro (Portugal). Predominantly, this wine is made from red grape varieties such as Tinta Barocca or Touriga Nacional. However, white port wines are also gaining more and more attention. The fermentation process usually lasts only 48 hours, so winemakers take special care to extract as much color and tannins as possible. Ports represent a harmonious interplay of tannins, sweetness, alcohol and numerous fruit tones. The best-known ports include Ruby and Tawny. In South Africa, winemakers have also been inspired by ports and sometimes create fantastic dessert wines from the traditional grape varieties. The De Krans and Delaire Graff wineries are particularly noteworthy in this regard.
