Paarl

Paarl is a major wine-growing district in South Africa and named after the granite rock Paarlberg, which shines like a pearl (African Paarl) in the sun after a rain shower. It is part of the picturesque Coastal Region area and is known for excellent wineries such as Backsberg, Glen Carlou, Laborie and Nederburg. The extensive range of grape varieties in Paarl includes Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. The wine-growing region accounts for about 20 % of the national harvest and creates premium wine at TOP level due to granite-rich clay and slate soils. Paarl also offers perfect climatic conditions consisting of long summer days and a cool Atlantic breeze, the so-called Cape Doctor.
