KWV

The KWV, the „Koöperatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika“, was founded in 1918, when it was given the powers to control the wine industry and, above all, to protect and support the winegrowers in their price negotiations. From 1940, the KWV had total control over the wine sector and for the first time set a minimum price for wine in South Africa. In 1957, the quota system was introduced, which significantly limited the expansion of vineyards. After political and general conflicts of interest (apartheid), the KWV reoriented itself in the 1990s. Controlled cultivation limits were abolished, which led to a rapid increase in the planting of noble grape varieties.
