Kleine Zalze – best conditions for premium wines

Kleine Zalze is located less than three kilometres away from Stellenbosch. None other than the founding father of South African wine cultivation, Simon van der Stel, was involved in laying of the cornerstone in 1683 by Nicholas Cleef and planted the first vines. Today's Kleine Zalze Wines is part of the Advini company. The climatic conditions are ideal for the cultivation of red as well as white wines.

RJ Botha

RJ Botha is the Cellarmaster at Kleine Zalze. Although he had no previous connection to the wine industry, the subject had always fascinated him. Therefore, he decided to study viticulture and oenology at the University of Stellenbosch. His career began in Durbanville and in 2010 he won the coveted title of "Diner's Club Young Winemaker of the year". RJ Botha has been working for Kleine Zalze since 2012 and impresses with his care and attention to detail in winemaking – which was rewarded with the "Winery of the Year" award in John Platter's Wine Guide in 2021.

Kleine Zalze Appeals to All Senses

The traditional winery Kleine Zalze is known in South Africa as well as internationally for its outstanding Chenin Blanc and Shiraz wines. Besides first-class wines, the farm offers first-class comfort in the rooms and suites of the Kleine Zalze Lodge and culinary delights in the Kleine Zalze Restaurant. Visitors can go for a hike or a run in the vineyards, ride a mountain bike, experience a wine tasting or discover the well-preserved historic city centre of the university town Stellenbosch. The lovingly restored buildings enable visitors to experience long-gone times.

Kleine Zalze: Pure Pleasure at All Levels

With changing daily specials and popular tapas platters, the Kleine Zalze Restaurant offers culinary delights for every palate and the perfect complement to the estate's award-winning wines. Visitors of Kleine Zalze stay in the four-star lodge and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Stellenbosch Mountains. The winery is located at the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the most famous in South Africa, and is the perfect starting point to get to know the best wines of South Africa firsthand. The view you can enjoy during your dinner – of the De Zalze golf course, the surrounding gardens and the vineyards – is simply astonishing.

Kleine Zalze: Modern Age meets Tradition

The wines of Kleine Zalze are defined by a classic structure and complexity. In every bottle, the intensity of the ‘New World’ – fully fruity flavours – meets the elegance and structure of the ‘Old World’ through which noble delicacies with character, complexity and balance are created. The white wines refresh during a warm summer evening, are perfectly balanced in regards to flavour and are ideal meal companions. The red wines of Kleine Zalze offer a large spectrum from ‘easy to drink’ up to heady, full-bodied and complex bottles. When it comes to the cultivation, the winemakers pay great attention to the creation of unusual quality. Cellarmaster RJ Botha has modern equipment at his disposal but only uses it cautiously and skilfully in order to preserve the natural character of the vines.
