Taaibosch – exceptional red wine from the Helderberg

The traditional winery offers its visitors a very exclusive and familiar insight into the world of wine. On the steep slopes of the Helderberg – the highest in the country – close to the Atlantic Ocean, the vines grow for the exceptional red wine The Cresecendo, whose finesse has already made wine critic Tim Atkin go into raptures. The closeness to nature, the warm atmosphere and the fantastic view make a visit to Taaibosch a unique experience.

Schalk-Willem Joubert

Schalk-Willem Joubert has experience as a general manager and as a winemaker, and has also travelled in the USA. In winemaking, it is particularly important to him that there is only minimal intervention in the process. Ecological aspects also play an important role, as the strictest organic principles have been integrated into the work in the vineyard and cellar to create an authentic wine.

Taaibosch wine high up on the Helderberg

The name of a wine is inextricably linked with the Taaibosch winery: The Crescendo. The red wine blend of Cabernet FrancMerlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is the star of Taaibosch, because the team only makes this one wine. The grapes for the South African red wine come from the highest vineyards in South Africa, because they grow on the steep slopes of the Helderberg. The altitude, the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean a few kilometres away and the old soils of decomposed granite provide perfect conditions for the exceptional red wine The Crescendo.

Taaibosch and its star The Crescendo

With its refined tannin structure and balanced character, The Crescendo not only makes the hearts of fans of South African red wine beat faster – the critics of the John Platter Wine Guide and Tim Atkin have already gone into raptures. The 2019 vintage received a fabulous 98 out of 100 points from the renowned wine journalist Tim Atkin in his South Africa Report of 2022. A visit to the Taaibosch wine estate is as exclusive as the red wine: as it is not open to the public, a visit to Taaibosch is very private. The lovingly restored Manor House from 1838, a guided tour through the vineyards and a tasting with winemaker Schalk-Willem Joubert make a stay at Taaibosch an unforgettable experience.

Taaibosch is a tribute to the South African fynbos

The fact that Taaibosch can shine in its splendour today is also thanks to the Oddo family from France who are the owners of the winery. Because they fell in love with the wine country South Africa, the French winegrowing family bought the traditional Córdoba estate and named it Taaibosch. The name means something like "tough or strong bush" – a homage to the fynbos native to South Africa, whose leaves are very hard. When redesigning the site, the team also made sure that only indigenous plants were planted. A visit to Taaibosch, which is located in Stellenbosch near Pink Valley, offers pure South African feeling – after all, you have a wonderful view of False Bay and Table Mountain
