Wine of Origin

The Wine of Origin system (W.O.) was introduced by the Wine and Spirit Board in South Africa in 1973 and is a seal of quality based on European appellations. This seal includes information such as the grape variety, vintage, and origin. The protected origins for wine in South Africa have been classified according to their natural commonalities. The delineations include Ward, District, Region, Geographical Unit and Single Vineyard. In addition, the Estate joins the "Wine of Origin", in which only grapes from its own production may be used. Once the label says "Wine of Origin", the wine is 100% from the named origin. The grape variety and vintage must match by at least 85%. The Wine and Spirit Board Community is responsible for monitoring and certification, which winemakers can apply for voluntarily.
