Oenology

Oenology is the Greek term for the study and science of wine, the so-called viticulture. The focus is on the science of winemaking and the activities of the winemaker. Subjects also include the science of vines, the planting and care of vineyards as well as the cooperation and development of cellar techniques. A trainee in oenology is called an oenologist. Training is available at technical schools, colleges and universities. There are several oenologists working in South Africa's wine regions. Beyers Truter from Kanonkop and Neill Ellis from the wine estate of the same name, for example, are trained oenologists.
