Cork

The Cork, or Cork stopper is a natural, elastic and waterproof closure, which is mainly used for champagne and wine bottles. It is made from the bark of the cork oak tree, which is common in the Mediterranean region. It closes the bottles, protecting the drop from external, negative influences. The material keeps the bottle tight, but allows tiny amounts of oxygen to pass through. This can lead to the development of special flavors after bottling. As in other countries, some South African winemakers have begun to rely increasingly on a screw cap. Controversies about the respective advantages and disadvantages continue and have not been fully resolved to date.
