Perched high on the southeastern slopes of the Simonsberg, Thelema stands among the highest-elevation wineries in Stellenbosch, reaching up to 530 meters above sea level. The cool, south-facing vineyards and iron-rich red soils provide ideal conditions for producing elegant, structured wines – most notably the Cabernet Sauvignon, which has earned Thelema worldwide acclaim.
In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention, allowing each vineyard to express its true character. In addition to its Stellenbosch estate, Thelema also operates a second vineyard in the cooler Elgin Valley, known for its fresh, aromatic white wines. The phoenix on the family crest symbolizes renewal, passion, and the ongoing pursuit of excellence – values that define every bottle of Thelema wine.

Winemaker at Thelema: Gyles Webb
Gyles Webb is regarded as one of South Africa’s most influential winemakers. In 1983, he left his career as an accountant in Durban to follow his passion for wine, founding Thelema with his family on the slopes of the Simonsberg. His guiding belief: Great wines are made in the vineyard, not in the cellar.
With this philosophy and a deep understanding of terroir, he brought international recognition to Stellenbosch – particularly for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Gyles Webb stands for authenticity, precision, and elegance, shaping Thelema into a true symbol of quality, consistency, and family dedication.
