De Toren - From hobby to sensational success
Emil and Sonette den Dulk, who founded the de Toren wine estate in 1991, have a shared history that marks the start of a completely new chapter. Frustrated by their previous life in Johannesburg, South Africa, they sought for a new purpose in life on the vineyards on the Polkadraai hill. What began as a small hobby, developed into a sensational success. Thanks in part to managing partner Albie Koch. Koch helped to improve the reputation of the winery and found the perfect partner in Emil den Dulk, who is known for a keen eye to detail. Instead of starting to make himself a rough overview of the currant situation, den Dulk opted for an analytical approach. From soil analyses to the selection of grape varieties, everything was tested. The result was, that Bordeaux-style red wines are going to be the central focus of the De Toren range. Eight years later, the Fusion V, as it is known today, was released and immediately captivated connoisseurs with its complex blend. Thus, this wine emerged as an absolute front-runner.
De Toren - Aiming high
The winery's fermentation tanks are a true premiere. Small, wide tanks, specially designed for De Toren vinify the juice, allowing a great deal of skin contact and limiting the number of racking operations. This enhances the aromas, phenols and colours of the wine and make it indispensable. The name "De Toren" refers to the estate's majestic white tower, which is especially fitting due to its function. It contains a gentle wine transport system that works solely by means of a gravity-driven hoist. The tower is therefore not only a symbol of recognition for the winery, but is also very useful.
De Toren - Environmental awareness is half the battle
The better the soil, the better the complexity of the wines. With this attitude, the De Toren team is dedicated to the nature in which the grapes grow. A selected team of committed women guide each plot of grapes with a urge to perfection. The result are wines of outstanding quality. Due to the great respect for the environment and their hard work, the winery received the official organic certification according to European standards for the artfully planted De Toren vineyards.
