Villiera Down to Earth White Blend 2023

Product information "Villiera Down to Earth White Blend 2023"
The Villiera Down to Earth White Blend presents itself in a greenish-yellow colour in the glass and combines the two grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc (75%) and Sémillion (25%) almost perfectly. The notes of gooseberry and passion fruit typical of Sauvignon Blanc contribute to the great fruitiness of the white wine. Flavours of herbs and grassy nuances are added by the Sémillon and both grape varieties together give the blend a balanced complexity. Try the Villiera Down To Earth White Blend on its own or with seafood, pasta, fish or poultry dishes.

Villiera – successful family-owned winery in Stellenbosch

For more than 40 years, the winery Villiera has been led by the Grier family and has been one of the leading producers of award-winning Cap Classiques from the Cape since the early days of South African sparkling wine. In 1983, cousins Jeff and Simon Grier founded the family business, and over time, Cathy Bruwer (née Grier) joined them. However, the Grier family’s history in South Africa dates back to the 1920s when their grandfather arrived from Britain and established a poultry farm. The second generation planted vineyards and with Jeff and Simon, the third generation became more interested in what to drink with poultry – leading to the founding of Villiera. The winery is named after its previous owners, the de Villiers family. Villiera has since then evolved into one of the largest private wineries in South Africa.

Villiera wines are a reflection of their terrior

The first foundations for the winery were laid in the 1940s, but the Grier family has expanded it almost annually, allowing the processing of 2800 tons of grapes in the cellar today. Just over half of the grapes are used for white and red wines, while the other half is dedicated to sparkling wines. The Monro Brut and Monro Merlot are leading the portfolio. Monro is the second name of all male members of the Griers family. Villiera is not only known for its sparkling wines; the estate has also made a name for itself in the grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Merlot. The white and red wines of the estate are distinguished by reflecting their unique terrior in Stellenbosch. The accessible wines of the Down to Earth line also symbolize the estate’s environmental consciousness.

Villiera places great importance on sustainability

A high level of emphasis is placed on sustainability in several respects and ranges from the utilisation of sustainable cultivation methods, biological pest control through the use of guinea fowls over recycling to solar systems. The winery is a member of the Old Vine project, which advocates for the preservation of old vines and supports indigenous plants by planting thousands of native trees. In addition, the vineyard boundaries have been planted with acacias – 2000 trees along a kilometre – to sequester carbon dioxide, cool the air and create habitat for animals. Speaking of animals, in 2009, the Wild Sanctuary wildlife reserve was established on 220 hectares of land. During a two-hour safari, visitors of Villiera can observe antelopes, springboks, giraffes and a variety of bird species up close. From wildlife to wine, the transition is seamless: inspired by the wildlife reserve, visitors can enjoy the wonderful wines of Villiera in the Tasting Room named The Wine Sanctuary, shaded by ancient oaks.
