Meerlust – Famous Wine Selection from South Africa

Meerlust is the icon of South African wine – it was this winery that revolutionised the wine industry at the Cape. Before, no one in South Africa was courageous enough for innovation. As the first South African estate, it pressed wines from various grape varieties and strayed off the beaten path of single-variety wines. That is the story behind the Meerlust Rubicon as a flagship of South Africa which has a refreshing flavour of black berries and features a wonderful tannin structure. When ripening slowly due to climatic conditions, the red grapes achieve a high concentration which the team mixes into sophisticated blends and makes them a pleasure for every wine lover. Meerlust takes care of each and every grape by hand.

Meerlust – Tradition Paired With Quality

The winery Meerlust in Stellenbosch is now in the 8th generation; as early as 1756, the Myburgh family took over the estate. The convinced wine lover and owner Hannes Myburgh has been running Meerlust since 1997 and unites tradition with the new world of wine. Nowadays, a historic manor house, rose gardens, a classic wine cellar as well as a bird reserve are part of the picturesque estate. Since 1987, the winery is a national cultural heritage, the only one in all of South Africa. It still enchants visitors because you can still find many unchanged details – just like hundreds of years ago. Since 2020, Wim Truter is Cellar Master at Meerlust. He stands for high quality and long-standing success – just like the whole winery.

Exceptional Terroir in South Africa’s South-West

Meerlust is located fifteen kilometres south of Stellenbosch in the midst of the most famous wine cultivation area of South Africa. No other region produces as many premium wines at a top level. Translated, Meerlust means ‘pleasure of the sea’ as it is merely five kilometres away from the impressive bay at the Cape of Good Hope, the False Bay. The terroir is similar to the Bordeaux equivalent and appeals with the mixture of various kinds of soil that are perfectly suited to produce this exclusive wine. The climate which pleases with the long summer evenings but also with a cool and coastal climate is perfect for sophisticated wine cultivation. This is rounded off by the evening fog – a regular occurrence at Meerlust which ensures the required moisture.
