Second wine

Second wine is the name given to the wine that comes after the Grand Vin, the premium wine, in the hierarchy of a winery. This designation can be traced back to the French oenologist Émile Peynaud. He suggested to use only old grapes for the Grand Vin and younger vines for the second wine. Likewise, grapes from somewhat poorer sites are taken, or grapes that were taken as a precaution before the actual main harvest due to weather conditions. Second wines are significantly cheaper in price and a simpler line of a winery. The term is common in Bordeaux, but is already spreading in South Africa.
