Geographical Unit

The Geographical Unit (GU) was introduced in 1993 and is a very large grouping of smaller sub-regions. These overarching wine regions consist of several districts, regions and wards. The only GUs in South Africa to date are Western Cape, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Western Cape is the largest Geographical Unit with a radius of 200 kilometers around Cape Town. The name of the GUs is usually not mentioned on the label of a wine bottle.
