Constantia

Constantia is the smallest but most significant wine-growing region in South Africa and is located on a green peninsula south of Cape Town. Jan van Riebeeck planted the first vines imported from Europe there in 1655. A good twenty years later, Governor Simon van der Stel acquired a farm here and christened it Constantia. Over time, the large estate fragmented into several smaller wineries, which the experienced Hendrik Cloete acquired in 1778. Since then, renowned wineries such as Klein Constantia, Steenberg and Buitenverwachting have once again been processing high-quality wine. The terroir is quite special but excellent for growing grapes, while the climate is the coolest in the country due to its proximity to the sea, thus prolonging the vine's growth period. The region is known mainly for the vine Sauvignon Blanc and the famous Muscat wine.
