What our Customers think
Morgenster Winery - A piece of Italy in wild South Africa
The family-owned Morgenster Winery is situated at the foot of the Heldberg and Hottentots Mountains near the town of Somerset West. Although the history of the Morgenster Winery and its idyllic location on the Western Cape dates back to 1711, it was a very special man who brought the estate to life in 1992 and made it one of the most important culinary establishments in South Africa and the world. The man in question is the Italian Giulio Bertrand from Piedmont, who has combined his passion for South Africa with his Italian roots. The winery produces award-winning, high-quality olive oils and Bordeaux-style red wines. In special collaboration with Pierre Lurton, a renowned oenologist at Château Cheval Blanc, the Morgenster wines are produced in a high quality manner and are enjoyed not only in private homes but also in top international restaurants.
Red wines in Bordeaux style from the Morgenster winery
Under optimal climatic conditions and with the sun, which warms the vines at the Morgenster Winery over many months, they can develop wonderfully. The winery specialises in red wines of the highest quality, which are a real competition to top wines from Europe. The red grape varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabenret Franc and Petit Verdot grow on soils with expressive minerality. With persistent dedication and a philosophy of producing only the best, the Morgenster Winery has already succeeded in producing a flagship wine of the highest quality with its second wine, Lourens River Valley, which has been awarded 4.5 of 5 possible John Platter stars. Morgenster wines are produced with exceptional quality, which gives them an excellent ageing potential of up to 20 years and more.
Morgenster and its premium olive oils
Besides first-class red wines, the Morgenster Winery is also an absolute pioneer in the production of high-quality olive oils. The untreated olives are cold pressed and filtered and the resulting olive oils are among the 20 best in the world. Giulio Bertrand was the only one in South Africa who received the highest award for olive producers "Mill of the Year 2007". The Morgenster olive oils are highly regarded worldwide with their unique aromas of mint, sage or even lemon. Morgenster's extra virgin olive oils are becoming a highlight for fresh salads and marinades and are refining aromatic dishes.
