Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a red grape variety originally from Croatia. Known in Italy as Primitivo, the grape is experiencing increasing popularity in the New World and especially in South Africa. Growing Zinfandel is a big challenge because the ripening is irregular and opaque. It is used to make mostly, but not only, red wines that are powerful and alcoholic due to the high sugar content. Juicy berry aromas and soft tannins are paired with spice notes such as cinnamon, clove and mint in Zinfandel. South Africa offers an optimal climate, as the vine prefers warm but not too hot climates.
