Klein Karoo

Klein Karoo, also called Little Karoo, is a wine region in South Africa, which at first glance does not necessarily look like a region for wine growing. Translated, Karoo means "steppe" and is a dry and barren area. It is located in the southwest of South Africa and stretches over 250 kilometers to the east. Artificial irrigation in the region is unavoidable, as annual rainfall is less than 200 mm. Nevertheless, Klein Karoo produces some of the highest quality wines in South Africa. Particularly dry white wines from the grape varieties Chenin and Colombard stand for excellent quality. The dessert and Muscat wines, which are produced in particular by the De Krans winery in the Calitzdorp district, have a long tradition in Klein Karoo.
