What our Customers think

South African wine diversity with Selection 16/79
South Africa – the land of complex and high-quality wines. Hardly any other wine country can date the birth of viticulture as precisely as South Africa. In 1679, Simon van der Steel, South Africa's first governor, laid the foundation stone for South African wine culture. This long-standing wine tradition is still reflected today in numerous premium wines – including the South African wines of Selection 16/79. Since then, there have been world-renowned wine creations and winemakers who have perfected wines at the absolute top level. Selection 16/79 is not only a tribute to the diversity of South African viticulture, but also to its founder, Simon van der Stel.
The diversity of the Coastal Region wine region
The wine-growing region at the extreme southern tip of South Africa, the "Coastal Region", is considered the cradle of most premium wines. On more than 30,000 hectares of vineyards, there is an absolute variety of Shiraz, Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, which are mainly found in the interior. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are mainly grown along the coast. The Mediterranean climate with hot summer months, high humidity and low rainfall offers optimal conditions for the vines. In addition, a fresh wind from the Atlantic – the so-called Cape Doctor – blows over the growing areas and provides sufficient moisture. South Africa's first planted vines originate in the Coastal Region and are characterised by a unique variety of soils. Red loamy soils, sand and gravel as well as granite provide a great wine texture.
A round trip through South Africa in a wine glass – Selection 16/79
In the historic Coastal Region, Simon van der Stel founded Stellenbosch, one of the first settlements. Today's university town lies about 45 kilometres east of Cape Town and is considered one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the country. The hilly landscape, the Simonsberg and the diversity of soils provide the perfect conditions for South African premium wines. This is also the case for the red wines of the Selection 16/79 collection: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Merlot and Cape Blend, a blend of Pinotage and Shiraz. Not only elegant red wines come into their own in Selection 16/79. With a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and s Sémillon, the line also includes South African white wines and a rosé. With their complex character, the expressive top wines of the Réserve Range are outstanding examples of the excellent art of winemaking in South Africa. The finest spirits perfectly round off the Selection 16/79 portfolio. Selection 16/79 stands for the deep connection to South African wine culture and reflects the multifaceted wine diversity from the Cape.
