The Oldest Wine Route in South Africa

Due to the sheer size of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the Wine Route is divided into four sub routes – Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates, Bottelary Hills Wine Estates, Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates and Stellenbosch Valley Wine Estates. Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates includes renowned wineries such as LanzeracKleine ZalzeBlaauwklippen and Dornier; Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates connects, amongst others, WarwickKanonkopMuratieSimonsigTokara as well as Delaire Graff. The Stellenbosch Valley Estates links NeethlingshofZevenwachtSpier and Meerlust.

Approximately 15% of the South African wine cultivation area is within the region Stellenbosch – not only due to the mild climate which is influenced by the False Bay and the Atlantic. Numerous white washed houses in Cape Dutch style and impressive oak avenues make the town and the surroundings with the vast vineyards a true highlight.

Spier-Farm-View

South Africa’s Mecca of Winemaking

The Stellenbosch Wine Route offers, like no other wine route in South Africa, an exceptionally high concentration of premium wines, rich in tradition, history, and passion. Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel – the later governor and father of winemaking in the Cape region. Located only about 50 kilometers from Cape Town, its picturesque landscape, with nutrient-rich soils, rainy winters, and warm summers, provides ideal conditions for cultivating world-class wines.

Soon, Stellenbosch developed into one of the leading wine regions in South Africa and experienced rapid growth. Numerous settlers founded their own wineries here, helping to establish a rich winemaking tradition. In the 1970s, when tourism in South Africa was still limited due to apartheid policies, the excellent wines of the region were scarcely known internationally. To change that, the wineries Simonsig and Spier joined forces to establish the Stellenbosch Wine Route – South Africa’s first official wine route and still today a symbol of quality and innovation in South African winemaking.

Stellenbosch Wine Route – South Africa’s Mecca of Winemaking

The Stellenbosch Wine Route offers, like no other wine route, an exceptional concentration of excellent premium wines, rich in tradition and history. Stellenbosch, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the father of winemaking in the Cape Colony, is the second-oldest town in South Africa. Just 50 kilometers from Cape Town, the region’s nutrient-rich soils, rainy winters, and warm summers provide perfect conditions for producing world-class wines. Stellenbosch quickly developed into one of South Africa’s leading wine regions, with numerous settlers founding their own wineries. In the 1970s, when tourism in South Africa was still limited by apartheid policies, the wines were little known internationally. To change this, the wineries Simonsig and Spier founded the Stellenbosch Wine Route – South Africa’s first official wine route. Today, it includes more than 148 wineries and is considered the heart of South African winemaking – a true mecca for wine lovers.

Highlights on the Stellenbosch Wine Route

Every winery along the Stellenbosch Wine Route is worth a visit. Lanzerac impresses with award-winning wines, a luxury hotel, and a fine-dining restaurant serving modern African cuisine. Blaauwklippen, with its Cape Dutch buildings, lies picturesquely at the foot of the Stellenbosch Mountain and is renowned for its outstanding Zinfandel. The Terroir Restaurant at Kleine Zalze is a culinary must – the estate also offers an 18-hole golf course and comfortable accommodation at the Kleine Zalze Lodge. At Warwick Estate, wines can be enjoyed in the midst of nature during a picnic, with vegetarian and vegan options available. In the historic rooms of Muratie, history comes alive: artefacts from the past and wines named after former owners, such as “George Paul Canitz” and “Ronnie Melck”, tell the estate’s story. Simonsig is synonymous with “Cap Classique,” having produced South Africa’s first sparkling wine using this traditional method – a must for any sparkling wine enthusiast. Spier combines historic buildings, art, cuisine, and leisure activities into a family-friendly experience. Neethlingshof, founded in 1692, impresses with its avenue leading to the manor house and its sustainable “Short Story Collection.” Beyerskloof is dedicated to South Africa’s national grape, Pinotage – its Diesel Pinotage is a true highlight with stunning vineyard views. Raats Family Wines specializes in Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Meerlust has been a family-run estate since the 18th century and a true pioneer – its “Rubicon” red blend is one of the first cuvées ever produced at the Cape. L’Avenir combines French and South African flair, focusing on elegant wines made from Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. Kanonkop has been producing award-winning wines for four generations and is also known for its traditional Cape Barbecue. Tokara offers award-winning wines, breathtaking views from the Helshoogte Pass, and fine cuisine. Delaire Graff is one of South Africa’s most luxurious estates – elegant wines, art, cuisine, and panoramic views ensure exclusivity. Dornier is known for its distinctive architecture and creative wines – the Bodega Restaurant serves seasonal dishes in a stunning setting. Kleinood is a hidden gem, specializing in Syrah and olive cultivation. Waterford offers a unique experience with its Wine Drive Safari, allowing guests to explore the vineyards and cellar up close. Ernie Els Wines combines the golf legend’s passion with award-winning red wines. Quoin Rock represents elegant, symbolic wines and modern architecture – a striking blend of tradition and innovation.
