The Oldest Wine Route in South Africa
Due to the sheer size of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the Wine Route is divided into four sub routes – Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates, Bottelary Hills Wine Estates, Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates and Stellenbosch Valley Wine Estates. Stellenbosch Berg Wine Estates includes renowned wineries such as Lanzerac, Kleine Zalze, Blaauwklippen and Dornier; Greater Simonsberg Wine Estates connects, amongst others, Warwick, Kanonkop, Muratie, Simonsig, Tokara as well as Delaire Graff. The Stellenbosch Valley Estates links Neethlingshof, Zevenwacht, Spier and Meerlust.
Approximately 15% of the South African wine cultivation area is within the region Stellenbosch – not only due to the mild climate which is influenced by the False Bay and the Atlantic. Numerous white washed houses in Cape Dutch style and impressive oak avenues make the town and the surroundings with the vast vineyards a true highlight.

South Africa’s Mecca of Winemaking
The Stellenbosch Wine Route offers, like no other wine route in South Africa, an exceptionally high concentration of premium wines, rich in tradition, history, and passion. Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel – the later governor and father of winemaking in the Cape region. Located only about 50 kilometers from Cape Town, its picturesque landscape, with nutrient-rich soils, rainy winters, and warm summers, provides ideal conditions for cultivating world-class wines.
Soon, Stellenbosch developed into one of the leading wine regions in South Africa and experienced rapid growth. Numerous settlers founded their own wineries here, helping to establish a rich winemaking tradition. In the 1970s, when tourism in South Africa was still limited due to apartheid policies, the excellent wines of the region were scarcely known internationally. To change that, the wineries Simonsig and Spier joined forces to establish the Stellenbosch Wine Route – South Africa’s first official wine route and still today a symbol of quality and innovation in South African winemaking.
