Plaisir – pleasure for wine connoisseurs

The sonorous name of the estate Plaisir in Paarl translates as "pleasure" – and that is exactly what the wines of the Plaisir collection and the Limited Edition are: complex and expressive, yet spicy and fruity in character, they offer pleasurable moments. The winery with French roots can look back on a long tradition and is one of the few estates in the Cape to have been awarded Conservation Champion status by the WWF.

Winemaker of Plaisir: Fred Fismer

Fred Fismer grew up in the Winelands – so it was an obvious choice for him to go into viticulture. In 2014, he graduated in viticulture and oenology from Stellenbosch Unviersity. Fred was an assistant winemaker at Stellenzicht and worked for a few other renowned wine estates in the Cape before joining Plaisir. As a winemaker, he works with nature as much as possible – for him, location is one of the most important factors in winemaking and viticulture: "It is very important to understand every aspect of the vineyards and in that way understand exactly what you are bringing into the cellar. If you can ensure good quality fruit, the rest is relatively easy."

What our Customers think

Plaisir: The joy of excellent premium wine

The roots of the Plaisir winery go back to 1693. It was founded by the Huguenot Charles Marais, who left his native France because he hoped for a better life for his family in South Africa. Since Charles Marais already had an idea of viticulture when he arrived, Plaisir was also one of the first wine estates in the region between Franschhoek and Paarl to cultivate vines for wine from South Africa. On the slopes of the Simonsberg in the neighbourhood of Vrede en Lust, the French flair can still be felt today – for example in the name of the Plaisir winery: it is reminiscent of the French hometown Le Plessis Marly, where Charles Marais came from. This evolved into "Plaisir", which means "joy".

Plaisir creates fruity and spicy wines

The wines of Plaisir bring joy in the wine glass. The focus in the part of South African red wine is on the classic red grape varieties Cabernet SauvignonMerlotPetit VerdotMalbec and Cabernet Franc. In the production of white wines, the focus is on the Chardonnay grape variety. Well-balanced white wines and soft red wines, in which the oak notes are well integrated, make the hearts of fans of South African wines beat faster. Fruity and spicy – the complex wines of Plaisir are both. Visitors can convince themselves of this in the Tasting Room.

Plaisir is a jewel of Cape Dutch architecture

In addition to the pleasures of the palate – expressive wines and light meals in the Plaisir Market restaurant – the Plaisir wine estate also offers something for the eye. The Tasting Room is located in a former barn built in 1823 and the Manor House, built in 1764, is today one of the finest examples of South Africa's unique Cape Dutch architecture. Also architecturally interesting are the replica of a historic mill and the striking gargoyles in the wine cellar, which are shaped like griffins. The mythical creature, which is half eagle and half lion, is said to ward off evil spirits and, according to legend, guards great treasures. Figuratively speaking, it guards the vineyards of Plaisir. To ensure that they continue to produce grapes for excellent South African wine, Plaisir is committed to the protection of flora and fauna. For this, it has been awarded the status of "Conservation Champion" by the WWF.
