Constantia – A Stone’s Throw from Cape Town’s Centre!
Wine cultivation in the heart of Cape Town? What might seem impossible at first becomes reality in this vibrant city. Only about 25 minutes from the city centre lies the historic Constantia Wine Route – the oldest wine region in South Africa. Nestled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Constantia is renowned far beyond South Africa’s borders for producing elegant, world-class wines from its sun-drenched vineyards.
Thanks to the exceptional quality and long-standing popularity of its wines, the Constantia Wine Route was established, connecting some of the most prestigious wineries near Cape Town – including Groot Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Klein Constantia, and Steenberg. Visitors can stroll along oak-lined avenues leading to grand Cape Dutch manor houses and enjoy wine tastings and culinary experiences of the highest standard – a perfect fusion of history, flavour, and South African hospitality.

The Oldest Wine Region in South Africa
The Constantia Wine Route is part of the first wine-growing region in South Africa and is considered the birthplace of winemaking at the Cape. As early as 1685, Simon van der Stel founded the original Constantia wine farm, laying the foundation for the global success of South African wines. After his death in 1712, the estate was divided, giving rise to three legendary wineries: Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwachting – each with its own unique history and outstanding wines.
The wines from Constantia gained international fame as early as the 18th century. The sweet Constantia Muscadel, known today as Vin de Constance, delighted European royal courts – even Napoleon Bonaparte had 365 bottles delivered annually to his exile. To this day, above all, Groot Constantia stands for this rich winemaking tradition, combining history, elegance, and pleasure amidst the picturesque vineyards at the foot of Table Mountain.

Constantia Wine with a Long Tradition
Constantia was already considered a top address for fine wines in the 18th century. The historic winery Groot Constantia created the legendary Vin de Constance, a dessert wine that caused a sensation at European royal courts. For a time, this wine was even the most sought-after and expensive in the world. Today, the winemakers continue this proud tradition by producing a modern revival of the famous dessert wine.

Highlights of the Constantia Wine Route: Buitenverwachting, Klein Constantia and Steenberg
The Buitenverwachting Estate covers around 100 hectares of land – its name meaning “Beyond Expectation” – and it truly lives up to it: an outstanding restaurant and award-winning fine wines delight critics and wine lovers alike.
Klein Constantia is famous for its Cape Dutch manor house and public tastings. The legendary Vin de Constance made the estate world-famous in the 17th and 18th centuries and was considered the most expensive wine of its time – a must-have in the cellars of Europe’s nobility. South African wine was already a major player in global markets back then and highly sought after by the rich and powerful.
Steenberg, one of the oldest farms at the Cape, perfectly combines tradition and modernity. In addition to first-class wines, the estate offers an exclusive country hotel and an 18-hole golf course. Bistro 1682 serves creative tapas, while the restaurant Tryn pays tribute to founder Catharina Ras – an extraordinarily strong-willed woman whose courage laid the foundation for Steenberg’s lasting success.
Perfect Conditions for Winemaking in Constantia
The Constantia Wine Route lies between Hout Bay in the west and False Bay in the east. The mild maritime climate, the shade of the Constantiaberg, and an annual rainfall of 800–1000 mm provide ideal conditions for viticulture. The reddish, granite-rich soil retains water exceptionally well – perfect for the wineries in Constantia, whose vineyards are among the most beautiful and productive in South Africa.
