Spier – Popular Destination and Great Wines
Spier is one of the most famous wineries and is a popular destination With various product lines, the estate has reached the top of the wine industry in South Africa in the eyes of many connoisseurs. Whether it is the 21 Gables Collection or the Creative Block range – both lines achieve best marks at various competitions year after year. The Frans K Smit is their ‘flagship wine’ and is only released in a limited number. The Signature Range rounds off the portfolio with easily accessible everyday wines with a high drinking pleasure.

Winemaker of Spier: Johan Jordaan and his winemaking team
Cellar Master Johan Jordaan grew up on a grape farm in Rawsonville in the Western Cape, where his passion for wine began at an early age. He graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College with a diploma in cellar technology, and joined Spier in 2007 as Senior Red Winemaker. Working alongside Frans Smit, Johan played a key role in developing Spier’s red wine portfolio before being appointed Cellar Master in 2021. In 2011, he was named Diners’ Club Winemaker of the Year. He was also recognised as Master Winemaker Chenin Blanc in 2025 and 2026. Today, Johan leads Spier’s winemaking team with a philosophy centred on precision, long-term vineyard stewardship and producing wines with integrity. He is supported by a team of winemakers including Heidi Dietstein, Bennie Liebenberg, Anthony Kock and Tania Kleintjes.
