Vergenoeged Löw – Winemaking for over three centuries

Nestled on a fertile piece of land along the Eerste River with a view on the Table Mountain and surrounded by vineyards, rolling fields and the Atlantic Ocean, the winery Vergenoeged Löw is located. A beautiful view then and now. It comes to no surprise that in 1696, Pieter de Vos named this piece of land “Vergenoeged”, which is Dutch and means “content” or “joyful”. In 1820, Johannes Gysbertus Faure acquired the estate, marking the beginning of a dynasty spanning over six generations. The Faure family meticulously maintained the winemaking tradition and elevated Vergenoeged to high esteem in the wine industry. Especially successful with their red wines, the Faure family garnered international acclaim and awards. In 2015, a new chapter unfolded in the more than 300-year history of the estate: the Faure family sold the property to Prof. Dr. Dr. Peter Löw and his “European Heritage Project”. Since then, the estate has been known as Vergenoeged Löw.

Vergenoeged Löw stands up for sustainability

During the restoration, great emphasis was placed on maintaining the beauty of the estate and its unique Cape Dutch style. An investment that pays off, as Vergenoeged Löw is one of the best-preserved farms in the Cape Dutch style now, gaining national monument status in 1974. However, this is not the only award that Vergenoeged Löw can proudly have a look at. The winery has been awarded the WWF Conservation Champion status by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the IPW Biodiversity Certification. Sustainability is a crucial focus for Vergenoeged Löw: profound respect for the land and every creature calling the estate home, forms the foundation for efforts to minimize the ecological footprint. Measures such as recycling, solar energy utilization, composting, and water-efficient drip irrigation systems are used, and a large amount of Indian Runner Ducks is deployed in the vineyards for natural pest control.

Vergenoeged Löw – Wine Enjoyment for all series

The Indian Runner Ducks are a distinctive trademark of Vergenoeged Löw and they even have their own dedicated wine collection – the Runner Duck Range. The uncomplicated wines are crafted for carefree enjoyment. For those, who prefer more complex wines, the creations of the Vergenoeged Löw Collection are the perfect choice. The estate’s flagship is the Heritage Collection Maximilian. One similarity among these wines is that they bear the names of Prof. Dr. Dr. Löw’s children. His wife Clara is the namesake of the restaurant “Claras Barn”, one of the two on-site restaurants. Visitors of the Vergenoeged Löw can taste the wines in the Tasting Room and for those, who are interested, can indulge in local delicacies during the indigenous food and wine experience. The sensory experience extends to a spa area and some luxurious accommodations. A visit to Vergenoeged Löw is always worth the journey.
