Franschhoek – In the Footsteps of the Huguenots
The Franschhoek Wine Route takes visitors in the footsteps of French settlers and their influence, which is still felt today in the Winelands. The South African town of Franschhoek is world-renowned for its premium wines and is located just 60 km from Cape Town.
“Franschhoek” means “Corner of the French” or “French Corner.” Over 300 years ago, French Huguenots fled to South Africa and settled in what is now the Franschhoek Valley, founding their first settlement in 1688. They brought their expertise in viticulture and winemaking and did what they knew best: producing excellent wine. To this day, their descendants continue to craft outstanding wines, including exceptional sparkling wines that delight connoisseurs around the world.
The Diversity of the Franschhoek Wine Route
Along the Franschhoek Wine Route, visitors can explore over 30 wineries – including some of the most renowned names in the South African wine industry. Many of the estates still bear their French names, giving the impression of being in the Provence. Here, culinary delights and a French way of life meet warm South African hospitality.
