Olifants River

Olifants River is a wine region in South Africa located north of Swartland, named after the Olifant River. The climate is rather dry and hot, but the Atlantic wind cools it down gently. In the Olifants River, vine cultivation is only possible with additional irrigation, which finds excellent conditions there thanks to the river. The fertile soil near the river provides an ideal basis for a wide variety of noble grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The wines from Olifants River are blessed with a particularly high fruit quality and also possess a lot of character as well as an early drinking maturity. Olifants River is the highest wine-growing location in South Africa. For example, one vineyard of the Cederberg wine estate is located at an altitude of 1150 metres.
