Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is a red grape variety and produces mostly light, soft red wines. Typical aromas are blackberry, red currant and herbs. The grape variety produces wines that are as colorful as they are strongly spicy. Due to the low tannin content, a Cabernet Franc is softer in the mouth than Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape is the father of two world-famous red wine varieties. On the one hand, the powerfully dominant Cabernet Sauvignon was created by crossing it with Sauvignon Blanc. And Merlot arose from a cross with a sometimes unknown grape. In the New World, winemakers mostly use Cabernet Franc as a blend with other grape varieties. In South Africa, the grape variety is now rarely used, as the country is more known for powerful and highly concentrated wines, but some successful experiments, including rosé, show the high potential of the vine in the Cape.
