Swartland

Swartland is a wine-growing area on the west coast of South Africa and is located northwest of Paarl. The name means "black land" because the landscape appears black after rainfall. Swartland is characterized by huge wheat fields and a seemingly endless sea of flowers in summer. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean provides cool breezes and dense fog in the summer months, which is conducive to high-quality viticulture. The soil of predominantly slate with occasional sandy and granite elements elicits premium quality wines from the region time and again. The most prominent winery is Allesverloren, with a world-renowned, high-end quality level. The up-and-coming region yields excellent grape varieties such as Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet and Chenin Blanc.
