The Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon flows into the glass in a dark ruby red. The bouquet reveals multi-layered aromas ranging from violets and blackcurrants to concentrated cedar and oak notes. On the palate, too, the red wine, which was matured for 26 months in French oak, impresses with its great structure and an opulent finish. A red wine with a strong character like the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent accompaniment to aromatic and rich dishes, for example with lamb or beef. A grilled steak is also a good choice with the Spier 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon.

Spier – simply grand Wines

For some years now, the winery Spier has been delivering absolute premium wines of the highest class. With three own product lines, the estate has reached the top of the wine industry in South Africa, as many connoisseurs think. The 21 Gables Collection captivates with its complexity and fruity character. The Creative Block wines impressively show that harmonious wines can well be made from a highly complex cuvee; these feature a fine elegance as well as a strong body. The Frans K Smit is the so-called ‘flagship wine’ and is only released in a limited number. Being a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, it includes the best aspects of a Bordeaux style wine such as elegance and harmony, paired with the typical fruity and rich character of the New World. For a short time, a great white blend is also available with the Frans K Smit White.

From Mass Producer to Premium Winery

Due to its size and the many wines the estate produces, Spier does not necessarily have the image of a premium manufacturer. Some critics even call it a mere ‘mass producer’ or ‘Disneyland for tourists and wine lovers’. Today, this assessment could not be more incorrect. Especially within the last few years, Spier has properly added quality and expression into its wines. The numerous awards are a pleasant confirmation for the vintner team of Frans Smit that achieves a consistently high quality with its chosen path. It almost does not matter which wine from Spier you taste, you will always enjoy a grand bottle. Frans Smit himself places great emphasis on the vines’ quality and calls himself a ‘terroir nerd’. He spends countless hours with the analysis of soil samples and tables in order to find the best possible place for the vines.

New Tasting Rooms and an organic Restaurant create Flair

In 2011 and 2012, the winery Spier went through a large-scale conversion. Completely new Tasting Rooms now shine in new splendour and welcome the guests in a warm as well as elegant ambience. In the restaurant that belongs to the estate, the chefs serve selected delicacies with ingredients that derive from organic cultivation. Not least this aspect makes for the unique flair at the winery Spier.
