The Steenberg Syrah shimmers in a beautiful red in the glass of the connoisseur and inspires in the bouquet with multilayered aromas, which reach from violet over nutmeg up to fruity notes. On the palate, there are particular nuances of dark berries and spices. The fine tannins and the well integrated acidity combined with the silky soft texture provide a pleasant mouthfeel. Enjoy the red wine, which has matured in French oak for 15 months, best to dishes with dark meat. But Steenberg Syrah is also a dream when combined with spicy dishes or pasta.

Steenberg in Constantia with True Luxury Atmosphere

Steenberg is one of the oldest properties in the Constantia region. Its former origin dates back to the year 1682 – back then, it was called ‘Swaaneweide’. Catharina Ras, a woman with a strong mind, founded the estate and was one of the very first South African women who owned land. Later on, Peter van der Stel decided to build his manor house there. Since 1969, it is registered as a national monument.

But it was only with the end of the Apartheid that the estate reached its current glory. In 1990, not only the vineyards but also the awe-inspiring manor house including housing complex were restored as part of an extensive and elaborate renovation. In order to be able to offer its visitors more and to make the stay truly unforgettable, Steenberg opened a luxury hotel in 1997 with a divine golf course and the numerously awarded star restaurant Catharina’s. Since 2007, Graham Beck is the proud owner of the wine farm Steenberg.

Excellent Location and Detailed Wine Cultivation

Steenberg is located less than 20 minutes away from Cape Town. The farm covers a total area of 203 hectares from which 60 hectares are completely planted with vines that grow at an altitude of 60 up to 160 metres above sea level. The vines are oriented towards the north-west to ensure sunlight reaches the vines as good as possible. Due to the mild, cool sea breezes, the temperatures are surprisingly cool and constant rain provides sufficient nutrients in the growth period. At the winery, the winemakers cultivate 60% white vines – dominantly Sauvignon Blanc, followed by Chardonnay and Sémillon. 40% are left to the red grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Steenberg is also one of the few wine farms that cultivate the Italian vine Nebbiolo. Those wines are often ideal meal companions with a well-defined acid content and fruity expression. Besides the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, the Merlot and Sémillon can also highly be recommended.

Catharina‘s and Bistro Sixteen 82

The through and through noble restaurant Catharina’s honours the founder of the Estate who, despite the unfavourable circumstances (after all, she survived four husbands and married a fifth), has always believed in the possibilities of Steenberg. Here, the kitchen serves modern variations for the sophisticated palate.

In the year 2009, Graham Beck decided to build the highly modern and exclusive bistro Sixteen 82 which hints at the founding year of Steenberg. Sitting on the sheltered terrace, gourmets enjoy the beautiful view of the impressive mountains that surround the vineyards. Head chef Kerry Kiplin dedicates his culinary art completely to the Asian cuisine, inspired by his frequent visits to Thailand.
